Shovkunenko Alexey Alexeyevich

1884 — 1974
Alexey Alexeyevich Shovkunenko (1884–1974) was a painter, People's Artist of the USSR (1944), and a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1947). He studied at the Odessa Art School (1901–1908) under K. K. Kostandi and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1909–1917). A master of watercolor, he created psychological portraits, industrial landscapes (the "Dniprostroi" cycle), and landscapes of Ukraine and Moldova. From 1935, he was a professor at the Kiev Art Institute. He was a laureate of the Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1970) and was awarded the Order of Lenin and other state decorations.
