Kalniņš Eduards Fridrikhovich

Eduards Kalniņš (Kalnyn) was a Soviet painter, People's Artist of the Latvian SSR (1963), and full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1970). He studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts in Riga (1923–1932) under Vilhelms Purvītis. From 1945, he taught at the Latvian SSR Academy of Arts (becoming a professor in 1955). Kalniņš's work played a significant role in the development of Latvian genre painting. His works, dedicated to the labor of fishermen and the sea, are characterized by monumentality and the rhythmic use of color planes. Notable works include: "Rafters" (1935), "New Sails" (1945), "Seventh Baltic Regatta" (1952), and "Latvian Fishermen in the Atlantic" (1957).
