Zhuravlev Firs Sergeyevich

1836 — 1901
Firs Sergeyevich Zhuravlev was a painter and educator, known for his genre paintings and portraits. From 1855 to 1863, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under P. V. Basin and A. T. Markov. In 1862, he was awarded a small gold medal for his painting 'Creditors Seizing a Widow's Property.' In 1863, he was one of the 'fourteen' students who refused to compete for the large gold medal, leaving the Academy with the rank of Class Artist, 2nd degree. He was a member of the St. Petersburg Artel of Artists. In 1868, he received the rank of Class Artist, 1st degree, for the paintings 'Coachman Arriving Home' and 'Return from the Ball.' From 1866 to 1872, he taught at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. He became an Academician in 1874 for the painting 'Before the Wedding.' In 1876, he was awarded a medal at the Philadelphia World's Fair. From 1876 to 1890, he was a member of the Society of Art Exhibitions.
