Saryan Martiros Sergeyevich

Martiros Sergeyevich Saryan (1880–1972) was a Soviet painter, People's Artist of the USSR, full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR and the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR, and Hero of Socialist Labor. In 1904, he graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied under V. A. Serov and K. A. Korovin. From 1946 to 1952, he taught at the Yerevan Theatre and Art Institute (becoming a professor in 1947). He was a master of landscape, portraiture, still life, book illustration, and theatrical set design. He participated in exhibitions of the Blue Rose, World of Art, Four Arts, and the Union of Russian Artists groups. In 1937, he was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition for a mural in the USSR pavilion, and in 1958, he received a silver medal from the USSR Ministry of Culture for a series of landscapes. He was a recipient of three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and other state awards.
