Shchedrin Semyon Fyodorovich

Semyon Fyodorovich Shchedrin was a painter and educator, and one of the founders of Russian landscape painting. From 1759 to 1767, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under A. Prezinotti. In 1767, he received a small gold medal and the title of class artist for his painting "View of a Field with a Flowing Spring." From 1767 to 1776, he was an Academy pensioner in Germany, Holland, France, and Italy. He began teaching at the Academy of Arts in 1776. In 1779, he was named an academician for the painting "Noon"; he became an advisor to the Academy in 1785 and an adjunct rector in 1789. From 1799, he headed the engraving and landscape class. He was also involved in the restoration of paintings.
