Kotov Petr Ivanovich
1889 — 1953
Petr Ivanovich Kotov (1889–1953) was a Soviet painter, Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1946), and a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1949). He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1909–1916) under F. A. Roubaud and N. S. Samokish. From 1923, he lived in Moscow and was a member of the AKhRR. He taught at VGIK and the Moscow Art Institute. His works captured the industrial enthusiasm of the first five-year plans (e.g., 'Kuznetskstroi. Blast Furnace No. 1', 1931; 'Red Sormovo', 1937). From the late 1930s, he worked extensively as a portraitist and was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1948 for his portrait of N. D. Zelinsky.
