Levitsky Dmitry Grigoryevich

Dmitry Grigoryevich Levitsky (1735–1822) was a prominent portrait painter and educator. He received his initial training from his father, the well-known Ukrainian engraver G. K. Levitsky, and studied under A. P. Antropov from 1758. In 1769, he was named an associate of the Academy of Arts, and in 1770, he became an academician for his portrait of the architect A. F. Kokorinov. He is the author of famous portraits of his contemporaries, including P. A. Demidov and the students of the Smolny Institute. He taught at the Academy of Arts from 1771 to 1788 and served as an advisor to the Academy from 1776.
