Volkov Alexander Nikolayevich

Alexander Nikolayevich Volkov was a Soviet painter and People's Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1946). He studied in St. Petersburg in the studios of V. E. Makovsky, N. K. Roerich, and I. Ya. Bilibin, and at the Kiev Art School under F. G. Krichevsky. His early works, influenced by Cubism, are characterized by geometric forms and rich color ("Pomegranate Teahouse," 1924). His 1930s works display decorative qualities and national character ("Girls with Cotton," 1932). Later, the artist focused on exploring human character. From 1929 to 1946, he taught at the Tashkent Art School.
