Favorsky Vladimir Andreyevich

1886 — 1964
Vladimir Andreyevich Favorsky was a Soviet graphic artist, painter, art theorist, and People's Artist of the USSR (1963). He studied at the K. F. Yuon studio, the Simon Hollósy school in Munich, and Moscow University. From 1907, he worked primarily in woodcut, developing a unique theory of book design. In 1942, he began working with linocuts. He taught at Vkhutemas, the Polygraphic Institute, and other leading Moscow institutions. He was a Lenin Prize laureate (1962). Significant works include illustrations for A. S. Pushkin, Shakespeare, and "The Tale of Igor's Campaign."
