Varnek Alexander Grigoryevich
1782 — 1843
Alexander Grigoryevich Varnek was a portrait painter and educator. From 1795 to 1803, he studied at the Academy of Arts under S. S. Shchukin. In 1802, he was awarded a large gold medal. From 1804 to 1809, he was a pensioner of the Academy of Arts in Italy. From 1810, he was an Academician, taught at the Academy of Arts, and directed the portrait and miniature painting classes. He became a professor in 1831 and an honored professor in 1834. From 1824, he served as the curator of drawings and prints at the Hermitage.
