Shevchenko Taras Grigoryevich
1814 — 1861
Taras Grigoryevich Shevchenko was a painter, engraver, poet, and revolutionary democrat. In 1838, he was bought out of serfdom with the help of K. P. Bryullov, A. G. Venetsianov, and V. A. Zhukovsky. From 1838 to 1845, he studied at the Academy of Arts under F. I. Iordan. In 1847, he was arrested and exiled to the Orenburg region and Kazakhstan, where he was forbidden from creating art. He returned to Saint Petersburg in 1858. In 1860, he was named an academician of engraving for his series of engravings, including works based on originals by Rembrandt and I. I. Sokolov.
