Kardovsky Dmitry Nikolaevich

1866 — 1943
Dmitry Nikolaevich Kardovsky (1866–1943) was a graphic artist, painter, theater designer, and educator. He studied at the Higher Art School under the Academy of Arts with I. E. Repin and in the private studio of P. P. Chistyakov, as well as with A. Azbè in Munich. In 1902, he received the title of artist for his painting "Samson and Delilah." He became a professor in 1907 and an academician of the Academy of Arts in 1915. He taught at the Higher Art School, VKhUTEMAS, and the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He illustrated works by A. S. Griboedov, A. P. Chekhov, N. V. Gogol, A. N. Tolstoy, and N. A. Nekrasov, and created set and costume designs for plays by A. N. Ostrovsky. He was named an Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1930.
