Turzhansky Leonard (Leonid) Viktorovich
1875 — 1945
Leonard (Leonid) Viktorovich Turzhansky was a Soviet landscape painter. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1898–1909) under V. N. Baksheev, V. A. Serov, and K. A. Korovin. From 1911 to 1912, he was a member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers), and later a member of the Union of Russian Artists (from 1912) and AKhRR (from 1924). Influenced by Impressionism and the work of I. I. Levitan, he developed a distinct impasto style, focusing on lyrical motifs of nature in the Urals and the North. Notable works include: North. Quiet Evening (1905), Gulls. Kama (1909), Early Spring (1917), Before the Storm (1923), and Spring (1926), all of which are held in the Tretyakov Gallery.
