Pimenov Yuri Ivanovich

Pimenov Yuri Ivanovich

1903 — 1977
Yuri Ivanovich Pimenov (1903–1977) was a painter, Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts (1962), and People's Artist of the USSR (1970). He studied at Vkhutemas (1920–1925) and taught at VGIK (1945–1972). His work is inextricably linked to the image of Moscow, ranging from the generalized, idealized canvases of the 1930s (New Moscow, 1937) to the lyrical urban landscapes and genre scenes of the post-war period and the 1960s. Pimenov masterfully combined documentary precision with a poetic perception of everyday life, whether in still lifes featuring household objects or series dedicated to new housing developments. He also worked as a theater designer and monumentalist. He was a recipient of the Lenin Prize (1967) and the USSR State Prizes (1947, 1950).
