Mochalsky Dmitry Konstantinovich

Dmitry Konstantinovich Mochalsky was a Soviet painter and graphic artist, People's Artist of the RSFSR (1969), and a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1973). He studied at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad (1929–1936) and taught at the V. I. Surikov Moscow Art Institute starting in 1937 (becoming a professor in 1950). During the Great Patriotic War and the post-war years, he created a number of paintings dedicated to Soviet soldiers and partisans, including "Victory. Berlin, 1945" (1947) and "After the Demonstration" (1949), both held in the Tretyakov Gallery. From 1954, he worked on series of genre scenes dedicated to the life of Soviet youth in the virgin lands (the "People of the Virgin Lands" and "Virgin Landers" cycles). He was a laureate of the I. E. Repin State Prize of the RSFSR (1967).
