Dubovskoy Nikolai Nikanorovich

Dubovskoy Nikolai Nikanorovich

1859 — 1918
Nikolai Nikanorovich Dubovskoy studied at a military gymnasium and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1877–1881) under M. K. Klodt. From 1886, he was a member of the Peredvizhniki (Wanderers) society, joining its board in 1899. The artist became famous for landscapes where a traditional romantic approach combined with a visionary transparency between reality and dreams. His work, close in spirit to that of A. I. Kuindzhi, was characterized by a symbolist sense of unreality. Notable works include "Winter" (1884), "It Has Gone Quiet" (1890), "On the Volga" (1892), "November Evening" (1900), and "Sleigh Path" (1900). From 1911, Dubovskoy served as a professor and head of the landscape studio at the Academy of Arts.
