Shlein Nikolay Pavlovich

1873 — 1952
Nikolay Pavlovich Shlein (1873–1952) was a painter and Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts. He graduated from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (under V. A. Serov) and the Higher Art School at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (under V. E. Makovsky). In 1903, he was awarded the title of class artist and a gold medal for his painting "The Dissolute." In 1919, he founded the State Free Art Workshops in Kostroma, which he led for over thirty years (later renamed the Kostroma Art School). He is known as a portrait master and educator who made significant contributions to the Russian realist school.
