Shishkin Ivan Ivanovich
1832 — 1898
Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was a prominent landscape painter, engraver, and master of the epic landscape. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1852–1856) and the Academy of Arts (1856–1860). In 1860, he received a large gold medal for his landscapes of Valaam Island. From 1861 to 1865, he was a pensioner of the Academy of Arts in Germany and Switzerland. He became an Academician in 1865 and a professor in 1873. From 1894 to 1895, he led the landscape studio at the Higher Art School of the Academy of Arts. He was one of the founding members of the Peredvizhniki (Society of Traveling Art Exhibitions).
