Repin Ilya Yefimovich
1844 — 1930
Ilya Yefimovich Repin (1844–1930) was a painter and educator, author of famous canvases such as 'Barge Haulers on the Volga', 'They Did Not Expect Him', 'Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan', 'Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks', and numerous portraits of Russian cultural figures. He studied at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts under I. N. Kramskoy and at the Imperial Academy of Arts under P. V. Basin and F. A. Bruni. In 1873, he was awarded the E. Vigée Le Brun gold medal. He became an Academician in 1876, a professor of painting in 1892, and a full member of the Academy of Arts in 1893. He taught at the Higher Art School attached to the Academy of Arts and was a member of the Peredvizhniki (Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions).
