Polenov Vasily Dmitrievich

Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov was a prominent Russian landscape painter, master of historical painting, theater designer, and educator. He studied at the Academy of Arts under P. V. Basin and F. A. Bruni. In 1871, he received a large gold medal and the title of Class Artist of the 1st degree for his painting "The Resurrection of Jairus' Daughter." He became an academician in 1876 and a full member of the Academy of Arts in 1893. He was a member of the Peredvizhniki (Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions). In 1905, he resigned from the Academy of Arts in protest against the shooting of demonstrators on January 9th.
