Nikolai Vasilyevich Nevrev (1830–1904) was a historical and genre painter, and a member of the Peredvizhniki (Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions) from 1881. In 1851, he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, studying in the studio of M.I. Scotti. Nevrev, a master of pictorial drama and satire, embodied the realistic traditions of the Peredvizhniki. He is the author of notable works such as 'Requiem at a Village Cemetery', 'Protodeacon Proclaiming Many Years at a Merchant's Name Day', 'Division of Inheritance', and others.
