Kasatkin Nikolai Alekseevich

1859 — 1930
Nikolai Alekseevich Kasatkin (1859–1930) was a painter, educator, and one of the founders of socialist realism in Russian painting. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1873–1883) under V. G. Pryanishnikov. He is known as the author of paintings depicting the life and labor of the working class, particularly his mining cycle. He was a member of the Peredvizhniki (TPKhV), AKhRR, and OKhR, as well as an academician and full member of the Academy of Arts. He was named People's Artist of the Republic in 1923.
