Ivanov Alexander Andreevich

Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov was a painter, landscapist, and master of historical painting whose works are marked by profound philosophical thought and innovative artistic language. He received his initial training from his father, A. I. Ivanov, and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1817 to 1828 under A. E. Egorov and V. K. Shebuev. From 1830, he lived in Italy as a pensioner of the Society for the Encouragement of Artists. In 1836, he was awarded the title of Academician for his painting 'The Appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene.' In 1857, he completed his monumental work 'The Appearance of Christ to the People,' on which he had labored for over twenty years.
