Flemish School

The Flemish school of painting is a movement that formed in the southern Netherlands provinces. At the end of the 16th century, the region's art was under the influence of Italianizing eclecticism. P. P. Rubens (1577–1640) brought new life and originality to the Flemish school. By combining the study of great Italian masters with direct observation of nature, he created an original style characterized by freedom of composition, broad technique, vitality, and energetic coloring.
