Basin Pyotr Vasilyevich

Pyotr Vasilyevich Basin was a Russian religious, historical, and portrait painter, academician (since 1830), and professor (since 1836). He studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under V. K. Shebuyev (1811–1818). From 1831 to 1869, he taught at the Academy, becoming a distinguished professor in 1856. In 1818, for his painting 'Christ Expelling the Merchants from the Temple', he was appointed a pensioner of the Academy, and in 1830, he received the title of academician for the painting 'Socrates Defending Alcibiades at the Battle of Potidaea'. Between 1837–1839 and 1843–1856, he executed monumental compositions for the Kazan and St. Isaac's Cathedrals in St. Petersburg. He was also a co-translator of J. Del Medico's 'Anatomy for Painters' (St. Petersburg, 1832).
