Kukryniksy
Kukryniksy is the renowned creative collective of three Soviet artists working in tandem. Their name has become synonymous with incisive political caricature and poster art.
The Kukryniksy group comprised:
· Mikhail Vasilyevich Kupriyanov (1903–1991)
· Porfiry Nikitich Krylov (1902–1990)
· Nikolai Alexandrovich Sokolov (1903–2000)
The name "Kukryniksy" is a portmanteau derived from the initial syllables of the surnames Kupriyanov and Krylov, combined with the first letters of Nikolai Sokolov's name and surname.
The artists met while studying at VKhUTEMAS–VKhUTEIN and began their collaboration in 1925. They achieved their greatest acclaim for:
· Caricatures and Cartoons: collaborating with the newspaper Pravda and the magazine Krokodil to create topical satirical imagery.
· Posters and TASS Windows: during the Great Patriotic War, they produced a series of iconic posters, most notably the first one created following the German invasion, "Relentlessly we shall crush and annihilate the enemy!" (1941).
· Book Illustration: they illustrated the works of Ilf and Petrov, Chekhov, Gorky, Saltykov-Shchedrin, and other authors.
· Easel Painting: their significant canvases include Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya ("Tanya", 1942–1947), The Flight of the Fascists from Novgorod (1944–1946), and The End. The Final Hours at Hitler's Headquarters (1947–1948).
The collective was awarded the titles of People's Artist of the USSR (1958) and Hero of Socialist Labor, and were laureates of the Lenin and State Prizes. Furthermore, the Kukryniksy are recognized for their courtroom sketches during the Nuremberg Trials.
